GACDL Listserver Policy
The members of the listserver shall consist of
members of GACDL. In extraordinary cases, non-GACDL members shall be included on
a case by case basis as approved by the executive committee of the Board of
Directors.
1) All listserver messages shall include the
first and last names of the author.
2) In order to protect the integrity of the
listserver and its members, no messages may be disseminated to anyone outside
of GACDL without express permission of all authors.
3) No off topic discussion is
permitted on the listserver. Any member may post an off topic question or
message with “OT” in the subject line; however, responses to off topic
posts must go privately to the originator of the thread and not to the
entire listserver. Please remember to press REPLY and not REPLY ALL
when responding to off topic messages.
Any member who violates listserver policy may
be subject to disciplinary sanctions by the Executive Committee of the Board of
Directors.

How do I subscribe to the GACDL listserver?
Yahoo calls the listserver a "group." There are several ways to
join a group (subscribe to the list):
|

or Michael Shapiro at mbshapir@bellsouth.net
and request an invitation to
join the GACDL group. Please be certain to identify yourself in
the email, as listserver subscriptions are open only to GACDL
members. |
Email Yahoo to Subscribe

What if my email address
changes?
From time to time, all of us change our email addresses.
Since Yahoo!Groups & the GACDL listserver know you by your email address,
you will stop receiving mail if your "old" email address is
cancelled. In order to continue receiving listserver mail, YOU must
subscribe from your "new" email address. This is as simple as
viewing the section at the top of this page called How do I
subscribe to the GACDL listserver? Note that it is NOT possible
for the listserver administrators to merely "change" your email
address listing on the listserver. With a "new" email
address, you must subscribe from that "new" email address.

Create a Yahoo ID so you
can Control Your Mail Delivery
When the GACDL listserver at Yahoo!Groups was created in July
of 2003, existing subscribers were "added" to the new list.
Controlling message delivery (such as upon the return from vacation, or just
adjusting mail between Individual Email, Daily Digest, No Mail and Special
Notices only) requires that one log-in to Yahoo, and thus a Yahoo ID is
necessary. These steps will "associate" an email address with a
Yahoo ID:
- Go to www.yahoo.com and
select "Sign up now" under the Personal Assistant heading, then
select "Sign up now" under Free Yahoo! Mail; or go directly to http://edit.yahoo.com/config/eval_register?.v=8&.intl=&new=1&.done=&.src=ym&.partner=&.p=&promo=&.last=
- Complete the page entitled "Sign up for your Yahoo! ID
with Mail." Be certain to enter your usual email address
on the line marked "Current Email" just beneath the line
requesting your birthday.
- Follow the rest of the instructions to complete the
creation of your Yahoo ID, and the instructions on the email that Yahoo
sends to your usual email address from line 2, above. This links your
Yahoo ID to your usual email address.
- Once you've completed the process, you can log in to Yahoo
using the ID and password you created.
- Click on the link marked "Go to My Groups," then
select the group gacdl.
- To adjust your email delivery settings, select "Edit
My Groups" and pick from the four options: Individual Emails,
Daily Digest, Special Notices only and No Mail.
- Remember to select the box marked "Save Changes"
to keep the new settings.
- You may delete your yahoo.com email address, so long as you
do not delete the "Current Email" address. This will stop
the duplication of messages at both your usual email address and your
yahoo.com address.

Already have a Yahoo ID
but need to Control Your Mail Delivery?
- Log in to Yahoo using your Yahoo ID.
- Under the Personal Assistant tab (purple) on the right hand
side of the screen, click on the link for "Acct. Info" (you'll be
asked for your password again for security reasons).
- Under the Member Information line (yellow) click on the
"Edit" button.
- Under the Email Information section (grey-blue) enter your
"real" email address (the one you get listserver messages at) in
the line marked Alternate Email 1.
- Click the button marked "Finished."
- You'll return to the Account Information screen where you
need to click a second button marked "Finished."
- Yahoo should send an email to your "real" email
address (the one you entered in the Alternate Email 1 line). Follow the
instructions on the email you get to verify that you want your
"real" email address associated with your Yahoo ID.

How can I put message delivery on hold while I'm away
and unable to check email?
Do
NOT use the "set vacation" command when going on
vacation; that command worked for the OLD listserver but will NOT
work on the Yahoo!Groups listserver.
A Note about Vacations: Yahoo!Groups allows subscribers to set a "No EMail" flag, such as when one goes on vacation, however GACDL strongly
encourages its members to use the "Special Notices" flag instead. This
ensures that routine listserver messages are stopped (they can be viewed online
at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gacdl upon one's return), while important
administrative messages, such as a change in the password to the Members Only
Section (MOS) are received.
There are two ways to temporarily stop your listserver while while on
vacation: When you return, you can catch up on the messages you missed by going to the
Messages section of the GACDL group. GACDL archives messages so that
you'll never miss messages that were posted in your absence. please note
that the "set vacation" command was for the old AltLaw-based
listserver, which was used prior to July of 2003. The "set
vacation" command will NOT work on the Yahoo!Groups listserver and
most likely will appear for all listserver subscribers to see (and joke
about). If you want to go on vacation & temporarily stop your
listserver mail, you must use one of the two methods shown above.

How do I restore message delivery once I've
returned from vacation?
If you've temporarily stopped your mail (such as while you're on vacation),
you will want to restore mail delivery upon your return. This process
works whether you've used the web ("method one") or email
("method two") procedure to temporarily stop your mail:
-
Make sure you're signed in to Yahoo!Groups. Then, go to
the My Groups page ( http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups)
and select the gacdl group. [Alternatively, you can go directly to the
gacdl group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gacdl/
and then sign in.]
-
From the main page, select the link at the top-right-hand
corner of the screen called "Edit my Membership"
-
Scroll down to the section called "Message Delivery"
-
Select the method of mail delivery that best suits
you: "Individual Emails" to have each listserver message
sent to you as it is posted; "Daily Digest" to have messages
bundled together; or "Special Notices" to have only administrative
messages such as a change in the Members Only Section (MOS) password sent to
you.
-
Click the Save Changes button.

How can I post a message to a group?
You can post messages to the GACDL group by email or from the Yahoo!Groups web
site:
|
Via Email
To send a message to other group members, create an email and address
it to gacdl@yahoogroups.com.
The email address is not case sensitive.
Note: you can only post to groups you've joined, and only from email
addresses registered with Yahoo!Groups. If you misspell the name of a
group, or attempt to send an email from an account other than the one you
joined under, your message will not be delivered. If you receive a failure
notice, check your email addresses and try again. |
Via the Yahoo!Groups Web Site
After you've signed in, go to the gacdl groupand click Post, write your
message, and then click Send Message. |
Note: Yahoo!Groups restricts messages to 1 megabyte in
size to prevent abuse. GACDL prohibits attachments to messages in order to
prevent virus infections.

What are the options for each of my
group subscriptions?
You have these options for your message delivery for each group:
|
Individual Emails
Messages are delivered one at a time to your email inbox. This is the
best option if you want to keep up on the latest post, however if the
volume of messages becomes too much, consider the Daily Digest feature. |
Daily Digest
Messages are delivered in batches of 25 or daily, whichever comes
sooner. This is the best option if you want to receive fewer mail messages
and don't need up-to-the minute posts in your inbox. |
|
Special Notices Only
This means you will receive email messages only when the group
moderator posts a "Special Notice" message. This is a good
option if you want to pass on day-to-day discussion for very busy groups
but do want to receive important updates from the group moderator (such
as changes in access to the Members Only Section). |
No EMail / Web Only
This option puts email message delivery on hold, for example while you
are on vacation. With message archiving, this option still permits you to
read messages at the Yahoo!Groups web site even though you're not
receiving the messages via email. |
To set any of these options, go to My Groups and choose
from the drop-down list of message delivery options for your group.

Why Don't I Get
Listserver Mail?
If you believe you are a subscriber to the listserver but haven't received
mail in a while, one of two things may have happened. You may have changed
your email delivery to No Mail or Special Notice only, or your email from
the listserver may have "bounced" (not been received properly) causing
Yahoo!Groups to temporarily disable your account.
Messages can be returned for several reasons:
 | Your mailbox may be full -- try deleting messages from your Inbox. |
 | Your ISP may have a backlog of email to process -- contact your ISP. |
 | Your ISP may be blocking email from Yahoo!Groups -- contact your ISP. |
In many cases, Yahoo!Groups can automatically reactivate your account once
the delivery problem is solved. However, in some cases you will need to manually
reactivate your account:
- Visit your My Groups page.
- Look for a bounce alert near the top of the page.
- Click the Alert link to reactivate your account.
If you use either Hotmail or MSN for your email,
these instructions may help you in resolving frequent "bouncing" mail issues:
- go to your inbox in msn.com (or hotmail.com)
- click on Options (probably on the right side of screen)
- click on Junk Email protection
- click on Safe List
- enter "@yahoogroups.com" omitting quotes OR "@ yahoogroups. com"
omitting spaces AND quotes in the box for Type an address or domain click
the add button
- enter "yahoo-register@..." omitting quotes OR "yahoo-register @ cc.yahoo-inc.
com" omitting spaces AND quotes in the box for Type an address or domain
click the add button
- enter "my-login-request@..." omitting quotes OR "my-login-request @
cc.yahoo-inc. com" omitting spaces AND quotes in the box for Type an address
or domain click the add button
